5 Ways To Stay Sane During the Dance Season
We’re almost there. Nationals are upon us and then we can enjoy the ‘off-season’! A time when we look back and review the sweat and tears of the recently wrapped up dance season. That is of course if you survive the travel, the long hours, having to listen to the same song over and over again, the screaming parents, the fast food, stressed out co-workers … etc. It’s during the ‘off-season’ that we often wonder how we survived the dance season.
Here are 5 great tips that will help you stay sane next dance season:
1. Take Care of Yourself - Stay Hydrated and Rested
Staying hydrated is the easy part, and very critical for maintaining your cool. Drinking plenty of water will keep your body running in top shape without heavy crashes or headaches. Your mind is also much sharper for all those important last minute decisions.
Getting proper rest can be hard but it’s even more important! Studies are showing that sleep is just as important as eating healthy food when it comes to staying healthy. In fact, without proper sleep your body can’t even digest food properly leading to even more fatigue. Try to sleep when possible, such as on long car rides or plane rides.
2. Don’t Take Things Personally
This can be hard to do when someone is pointing a finger at your face screaming ‘you, you, you, you’, but it’s very important not to take things personally. A lot can go wrong during the dance season and that’s normal. Passionate parents, or even staff members, may take their frustrations out on you. As a director, or owner, it’s important to be able to listen reasonably to the person speaking, sift through the insults, and find the root of the issue. This will allow you to find and fix the root of the problem and not carry a situation around with you all day.
If you find you are dealing with a completely unreasonable person then let them vent and let it go. It’s no secret that a lot of people have a lot of issues. These issues can force a person to act clouded and become unable to see both sides of a situation. What can you do to win these arguments? Let them vent and let it go. The last thing you want to do is take it personally and walk around with it all day.
3. Act Decisively
Decisions should be made on an ASAP basis. If you let tasks build up they will consume you. So handle each task at hand. This also shows your confidence as a leader and role model to the children running around. By acting calmly and quickly people will sense your confidence and become more agreeable and easier to work with. Others will feel more relaxed during times of high stress. Your influence and energy will affect the actions of your staff and the vibe of the audience and attendees.
4. Understand Your Staff and Colleagues
You’re going to be spending a lot of time with your staff and colleagues. A lot of hungry and tired hours, when your emotions are out of control, will be spent together. Some people are extroverts, introverts, they can be loud, shy, or have a unique sense of humor. All of this diversity is wonderful but it can create relationship conflicts. By getting to know every team member you can understand how to work with them in times of ease and times of tension. Team building exercises in the off-season are a great way to break the ice and share some laughs together.
5. Remember Why You Started
At the end of the day, if the children are having a great time and receiving valuable critiques, you’re doing a great job. When we talk to our clients many say the reason they started a dance competition is to help the many young dancers’ reach their dreams. By reminding yourself about this, and all the other amazing benefits that dance competitions have for our children and youth, you can share a smile with them as they bounce around onstage and backstage in their costumes and make-up. Enjoy the lighter side of things during the quieter moments!
